10th Annual Catawba RiverFest  scheduled at Lake James State Park
Catawba Valley Heritage Alliance and Lake James State Park announce the 10th annual Catawba RiverFest, to take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at Lake James State Park; Paddy’s Creek Area in Nebo.
For generations, the Catawba River has shaped the economic vitality of the region and remains a public commons of immeasurable recreational value.  The river and its system of reservoirs face competing interests, including power generation, public water supply, waste assimilation, recreation and critical aquatic wildlife habitat. Catawba RiverFest  promotes a greater appreciation of this vital waterway and efforts to protect and improve this valuable natural resource.  The day-long event highlights a variety of conservation groups and their ongoing work to improve the quality of life for people and animals along the river.
The event will take place at the Paddy’s Creek Area of Lake James State Park, located on State Highway 126. Facilities at the park include a 700-foot swimming beach, concession stand, 6,000 square foot bathhouse, two picnic shelters, more than 20 individual picnic sites, nearly seven miles of hiking trails, and a 450-vehicle parking lot. The Paddy’s Creek Area encompasses more than 3,000 acres of undeveloped open space and 33 miles of beautiful Lake James shoreline
The main event; a midday water derby, will include an obstacle course and an extended lake race.   Prizes for the derby are offered in part by CBS Sports of Morganton, NC.  Visitors are encouraged to bring their canoes and kayaks and participate in this fun competition, which is open to all ages and levels of experience.  A raffle will be conducted in conjunction with the festival , with various prizes including 9-foot Heron 9 kayak.  Tickets will be available for purchase at Catawba RiverFest  and at CBS Sports.
Festival goers will also have an opportunity to demo kayaks and paddleboards, sign up for a ranger-guided boat tours and witness a rehabilitated hawk be released back into the wild.
