Clean Water Laws Are Neglected, at a Cost in Suffering

The New York Times has been doing a series of article on water issues. Two of the major conclusions of the series are that many dischargers are out of compliance with the Clean Water Act standards and that enforcement is lax.

Pollution entering South Fork of the Catawba River

The full text of the New York Times articles is at the following link.  This report focuses on the effectiveness of the Clean Water Act.  The New York times website also has some links to some interactive tools, including:

1) an option that lets you search your state for data on polluters;
2) a huge analysis on enforcement actions by state (be sure to click the next page to see all three versions of the US map-each with a different data layer/additional information);
3) and videos with real people poisoned by polluted water.

In these troubling financial times this information goes a long way towards illustrating why Waterkeepers are vitally important to the ongoing fight for clean water.

Fish advisories have been issued throughout the Catawba-Wateree River basin for various types of fish.  Many of these fish advisories are the result of testing initiated by Catawba Riverkeeper and confirmed by state and local officials.  For a chart identifying fish types with the applicable adisories for the Charlotte area, click here.   For more information about the fish advisories, click here.
