David Merryman was born in Memphis, TN. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Gardner-Webb University (summa cum laude), where he was the recipient of the Paul J. Stacy Biology Award and served as president of Beta Beta Beta. From August 2006-May 2008, he completed the coursework towards a Master of Science in Applied Ecology and Conservation Biology from Frostburg State University.
David is currently the Catawba RIVERKEEPER® of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. Prior to joining the foundation, he worked as a chemist in an oil and organic extractions laboratory and as an AmeriCorps Fisheries Intern at Yellowstone National Park. For nearly a year, David served as the Assistant Catawba RIVERKEEPER® before electing to move to Maryland for work on a Master’s degree. He returns to the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation with knowledge of the region and most-importantly the Catawba River.
David is an active board member of the Catawba-Wateree Relicensing Coalition and the River District. He also serves on the York County Culture and Heritage Museum’s River Advisory Committee and has been recently appointed to the SC Scenic Catawba River Advisory Council. David has presented papers and has spoken at Regional and National Conventions on environmental and social topics.
