Report Pollution

Help be the eyes and ears of the Catawba RIVERKEEPER® staff by reporting

  • Sewage overflows
  • Discharges exceeding allowable limits
  • Unpermitted discharges
  • Failure to adequately control sediment from construction sites
  • Illegal clearing of buffer areas (most of the Catawba River has at least a 50 foot buffer requirement)
  • Fish kills (more than one or two fish)
  • Invasive aquatic species
  • Other events negatively impacting the waters of the Catawba basin

Please fill out all applicable sections of the following form and click the "submit" button. If you have digital photos of the event, please attach them to the complaint form or email them to riverkeeper@catawbariverkeeper.org

In addition, we encourage you to report problems directly to local, state and federal environmental officials.  Catawba Riverkeeper is NOT a government agency and we do not have the same powers to enter private property and order pollution abatement measures as government enforcement agencies. 

  • To report South Carolina spills or fish kills call 1-888-481-0125.
  • To report North Carolins spills or fish kills,

    • call your local regional office during normal business hours
      • Call 704-663-1699 for most Catawba basin areas or
      • Call 828-296-4500 for Burke, Caldwell, McDowell and other mountain counties) or 
    • Call 800-858-0368 after hours.

  • In addition, you should report spills and releases to federal authorities (EPA and Coast Guard) at 1-800-424-8802

SELC, on behalf of Catawba Riverkeeper, has moved to intervene in a lawsuit filed by the State of North Carolina over pollution from coal ash waste ponds at Duke Energy's Riverbend power plant on Mountain Island Lake.
May 28, 2013 State Files Second Lawsuit Against Duke
On May 23, the State of North Carolina filed a second lawsuit alleging pollution of Mountain Island Lake from coal ash waste ponds at Duke Energy's Riverbend power plant. This new lawsuit was filed in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte), where most of the 860,000 people live who drink water from Mountain Island Lake.

The editors of The Charlotte Observer published an editorial in the Sunday edition of the paper asking Duke Energy to clean up the coal ash waste ponds and related contamination at the Riverbend power plant on Mountain Island Lake.
