The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation is committed to following the instructions of its donors and members regarding the privacy of information provided to CRF.

The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for this website (www.catawbariverkeeper.org). This website is maintained by the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation which advocates for and secures protection and enhancement of the Catawba River, its lakes, tributaries and watershed so that it will always sustain the human and wildlife populations that depend on it for life..

We collect personal information in two ways:

When you sign up for events, petitions or public alerts: In order to effectively achieve our mission, we collect the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of members of the public for events, petitions and alerts about important decisions being made on environmental issues. The information is collected voluntarily through the Sign-Up pages on the website and through membership forms. The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation can use this information to alert the subscriber of news relating to the Catawba-Wateree River or events through emails, phone calls, or mailings.

When you join CRF as a member or make a donation: The user supplies their name, street address, email address, comments, and payment information through a web form. This information is stored in a secure database.

All information is stored in a secure database and is used only by the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation for internal purposes, unless expressly stated in the website page or document requesting the information. We will not share, sell, or rent this information to any outside organization.  However, we periodically publish the names of donors in our newsletter and on our website unless instructed to keep the name of the donor confidential. 

Should our practices change, this notice will be immediately updated. Regardless of later updates, we will never use the information you submit under this current notice in a new way (in a way not described in this notice) without first providing you an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prevent that use.

May 15, 2013 Radiation Leak at Catawba Nuclear Station
On May 15, 2013, Duke Energy reported a leak of of radioactive Tritium at the Catawba Nuclear Station on Lake Wylie. The available information raises more questions than answers.

High water levels in the lakes, and unusually high flows and fast-moving water in the riverine sections of the River, are combining to make the River unsafe for swimming and paddling. Trees, debris and sewage are being carried with the floodwaters.   • Failure to control sediment from construction sites
  • Illegal clearing of buffer areas
  • Fish kills 
  • Unpermitted discharges
  • Other issues that concern you

Click here to fill out a pollution report or to report water pollution to Catawba Riverkeeper by phone, call 1-888-679-9494 or 704-679-9494.  In addition, to informing your Riverkeeper, you should also report spills or contamination to federal, state and local environmental officials.

To report South Carolina water pollution call 1-888-481-0125.

To report North Carolina spills or fish kills, call your local regional Department of Environment & Natural Resources office during normal business hours (704-663-1699 for most Catawba basin areas or (828) 296-4500 for Burke, Caldwell, McDowell and other mountain counties) or 800-858-0368 after hours.  (For more information on NC spill reporting, click here)
