The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation cannot meet its mission without the help of its members and volunteers. Below is a suggested list of ways you can help our river. Feel free to let us know of other ways you would like to help.

  • Riversweep Volunteers - The 2009 Riversweeps on Lake Wylie and Lake Norman were a huge success! But it took a great amount of organization and a number of volunteers. Individual activities

  • Organize or participate in lake / stream cleanups Riversweep 2007

  • Adopt an island

  • Adopt a stream

  • Protection

  • Become an Islandkeeper - help keep islands in the Catawba lakes clean

  • Become a Streamwatcher - monitor a specific creek in the Catawba watershed.

  • Participate in Muddy Water Watch - identify and report violations of sedimentation and erosion control rules

  • Become a Covekeeper, Cove Watcher or Water Watcher - patrol a portion of a lake or river or help us respond to reports of problems (Covekeeper Volunteer Program)

  • Conduct Water Quality Monitoring

  • Perform River Patrols - Air and Boat

  • Conduct storm drain stenciling

  • Fundraising / Events

  • Plan or host social and fundraising events

  • Volunteer to staff a booth at events where we are invited to have a booth

  • Assist in maintaining donor records

  • Help identify potential members and develop prospect list

  • Write letters to potential donors

  • Assist with grant writing

  • Help us cleanup and/or refurbish used boats donated to CRF

  • Educational

  • Build informational kiosks with information about the Catawba River

  • Write articles for our Newsletter
  • Become a leader in an after-school program about the environment

  • Speak about environmental issues to groups on behalf of CRF

  • Represent the Catawba Riverkeeper at meetings

  • Review documents and gather data for pending litigation on the Concord-Kannapolis IBT

  • Comment on proposed permits and requests for regulatory approvals

  • Monitor and comment on proposed land-use plans

  • Monitor meetings of commissions and councils, such as county commissions

  • Circulate petitions

  • Write articles or letters to the editor

  • Contact elected officials about issues

  • Recruit people to attend clean water lobby day

  • Participate in Clean Water Lobby Day

  • Assist with adding new work stations to computer system, making backup system work, and setting up hardware and software

  • Call businesses to get names of individuals at each business who are responsible for philanthropic giving

  • Call state and local governments to get name and contact info for people responsible for various issues relating to the CatawbaRiversweep 2007

    Mar 05, 2010 New Sewage Plant at ReVenture Park
    Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is planning to build a new $197 million wastewater plant in proposed business park on the former Clariant (Sodyeco) property on the west side of the Catawba River. The plant would serve Mt. Holly via a pipe that under the Catawba River and Mecklenburg County.
    Mar 03, 2010 Stricter Water Classifications Proposed for Catawba
    DENR has proposed that segments of the Catawba River be reclassified as High Quality Waters (HQW). It would include the main stem of the river and the headwater tributaries starting at the river’s source and ending at the river’s confluence with the Left Prong Catawba River.
    Feb 24, 2010 Mountain Island Lake Impaired
    NC Division of Water Quality's draft 2010 Impaired Waterbodies List includes a large portion of Mountain Island Lake, the main drinking water supply for the Cities of Charlotte, Gastonia and Mount Holly.

    A recent article entitled, "Erosion is latest fallout of recession," by Bruce Henderson with the Charlotte Observer highlights many of the problems associated with large developments that find themselves in bankruptcy or foreclosure.
