Hickory Covekeepers Cleanup
Each year, the Lake Hickory Covekeepers organize a cleanup in conjunction with Big Sweep on the first Saturday in October. In 2011, the cleanup was held on October 2.

The weather for the 2011 cleanup was beautiful, but difficult. Temperatures in the fifties and winds gusting at twenty-nine mph stirred up the lake forming whitecaps, and blowing boats out of our control. Mary Moren's pontoon boat blew repeatedly against the shoreline as she waited for David Yoder and Lohr Loveland to relay the bagged trash from the shoreline to her boat. Only Mary's skillful maneuvering enabled her to dock successfully with each load at the Marina. Both David and Lohr risked being overturned in their heavily trash laden crafts as they transported the trash to Mary's boat. The pictures only begin to tell the difficulty of collecting the trash from this site. (Click here to see more pictures of the cleanup.)
Many thanks are due to Lake Hickory Covekeepers, Muddy Water Watchers, Catawba Valley Outing Club Members, local community volunteers, and Lake Hickory Marina.

The dedicated, hard-working, and greatly appreciated crew included: David Yoder, Lohr Loveland, Mary Moren, Diane Arbour, Ron Haynes, Fred Johnson, Steve Anderson, Jo-Jo Moore, Jeanne Stumpff, and Caroline and John Martin. We also appreciated the assistance of North Carolina Big Sweep Local Coordinator, Jim Carr, Lake Hickory Marina and Manager Jo-Jo Moore.
