A plan to put no-wake zones along the Catawba River is making waves. Paddle boarders and kayakers have become frustrated because they say some motorboats speed down the river putting them in danger. Those opposed to the no-wake zones say they infringe on boaters' rights.
In an effort to make the waters safer, the North Carolina Resources Commission voted to put up no-wake zones on the Gaston County and Mecklenburg County sides of the Catawba River. Buoys were put up Friday near the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
A public hearing on the no-wake zones is set for Thursday, May 7th, at 7 p.m. at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
