Lake Wylie - Bridging the Catawba River's transition into the Palmetto State, Lake Wylie's 25+ mile course here is more remenisant of a large, wide river than a lake. Created in 1904, it is the oldest lake on the Catawba River and the third largest. It has a total surface area of 12,139 acres and it has 67 miles of shoreline in Mecklenburg County. Water stays in Lake Wylie for about 32 days before flowing through the dam and into the Catawba River.
There are 3 electricity producing stations on the lake as well as recreational facilities of 7 public boat ramps, 5 marinas, two fishing access areas and one botanical garden. The Allen Steam Station, a Duke Energy generating station on Lake Wylie contains one of the EPA's 44 High Hazard Coal Ash Ponds. Wylie is the source of drinking water for several communities including Belmont, NC and Rock Hill, SC.
A large and active Lake Wylie Covekeeper group meets on the second Wednesday of each month.
