As part of our effort to assess the use of our lake and the status of wildlife and its habitat on Mountain Island Lake we visit different areas of the lake to see who and what is using the islands, shorelines and the water itself. When our group took a boat trip upriver to survey a secluded island in Duck Cove, just a few miles downstream from the dam at Lake Norman and Cowan's Ford we weren't sure what we might find. Some of the land next to our lake gets a lot of use and, as a result, often ends up with considerable trash and signs of human presence. As we walked the island in Duck Cove during this preliminary survey we found a lot of poison ivy but very few signs of use (little trash, no fire rings). We also found few signs of wildlife.

Lakekeeper Alice Battle and Skip Hudspeth survey the island at Duck Cove.
We will check back from time to time to see how the island is faring. Other groups on our lake are also monitoring MIL islands for use by humans and wildlife. We can always help our lake by taking our trash with us and leaving as few signs of our visits as possible.
