Riverbend Retirement Statement By Duke Energy
The June 2011 statement by Duke Energy regarding its future plans for the Riverbend Steam Station

This past June Duke Energy issued a statement reaffirming its plans to close the Riverbend Steam Station by 2015. The statement stopped short of saying the station would close completely and without any generating capacity, in any form. "We are evaluating a number of options for how we would retire the facility and whether any other non-coal power generating functions would continue there. "
As for the coal ash ponds on the site, the Duke statement says "Closing the two ash basins at Riverbend would follow a prescribed process with state oversight and approval. NCDENR required as part of our new wastewater permit there to submit a closure plan for the basins within one year of retiring the plant. Any final federation regulations for ash basins also would influence basin closure requirements."
