Ploggers keep 992 pounds of trash out of Charlotte creeks

On Wednesday, September 19, the NoDa Brewing Run Club and Catawba Riverkeeper Fondation’s (CRF) Young Allies of the River group kept 992 pounds of trash out of Charlotte creeks through plogging.

What’s plogging? It’s the Swedish fitness craze where joggers pick up trash while they run. The term is a combination of jogging and the Swedish phrase “ploka upp” which means to pick up.

Earlier this summer, CRF and the NoDa Brewing Run Club teamed up for the first ever plogging night. This time, the ploggers more than doubled their haul!

Prizes were awarded to the participants who collected the most trash. The first place winner was Eric Ayers who collected a total of 282 pounds of trash!

Notable finds include:

  • 2 TVs
  • 2 Microwaves
  • 2 Shopping Carts
  • 2 Tires
  • Broken toilet
  • Baby stroller
  • Side panel of a car

Plogging with the Run Club made a huge impact on our local environment and the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. NoDa Brewing Company pledged to donate $1 to CRF for every pound of trash collected!

Big thanks to all of the ploggers, the NoDa Brewing Run Club, and NoDa Brewing Company!
