On Friday the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) submitted comments on the behalf of Catawba Riverkeeper and partners opposing the draft Wateree Coal-fired power plant’s discharge permit. After being sued by the Sierra Club for neglecting to renew the previous permit (which expired in 2013), SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has proposed less monitoring and fewer enforceable limits for the facilities effluent. This is in direct contradiction to the purpose of the discharge permit system, evidence of arsenic contamination, and increases in public exposure. We are asking DHEC to amend the permit to require increased monitoring, more protective limitations, and the implementation of best available technologies. You can read the full comment letter here. The draft permit and a recording of the hearing are available on DHEC’s page.
