Education Assistant

Position Title: Education Assistant (Seasonal/Part-time)

Accountability: Education Assistants report to the Education Manager

Responsibilities: Education Assistants work alongside Educators under the supervision of the Education Manager. They are responsible for group management, program preparation, and program implementation for adult and youth programs. They provide outreach and engagement through educational programs about the Catawba Wateree River Basin and the mission of Catawba Riverkeeper. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Engagement programs as available.

Day to Day Duties:

  • Work alongside Education Manager and Educators to facilitate education programs from set-up to breakdown
  • Assist Educators during Riverkeeper executed programs
  • Manage conflict resolution situations with participants
  • Maintain safe and enjoyable environment for participants
  • Teach using an experiential learning style with participants
  • Possible educational programs include day programs, summer camps, Floating Classroom, CREEK, Riverkeeper Learning Series
  • Programs may include both land and water components

Qualifications:

  • 18+ years of age
  • Some experience in environmental education, teaching, or other education programming; for example, informal educators, camp counselors
  • Ability to manage a group of youth ages 6-15
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Comfortable speaking in a group setting and ability to customize communication to fit a group’s needs
  • Time management skills; personal timeliness, manage group movement between locations, facilitating activities within time frame
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively, and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, lifestyle, and cultural backgrounds
  • Detail-oriented; consistently produces high-quality work without direct supervision
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • CPR/AED Certification (if unable to attend specific staff training)

Requirements:

  • Pass county criminal background check
  • Mandatory 3-day staff training hosted in March, June, or as hired that includes:
    • Detailed information about Catawba Riverkeeper
    • Group facilitation activities
    • Department and job specific training
    • Cross-training in Engagement programs
    • Riverkeeper specific CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
    • Cost $40 for overall training program
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Must be able to lift at least 35 pounds
  • Must be able to traverse a variety of terrains
  • Will be required to work in a variety of weather conditions outdoors
  • Must have reliable personal transportation
  • Comfortable in the water on a kayak and on a motorized boat preferred
