Education Counselor

Position Title: Education Counselor (Seasonal/Part-time)
Accountability: Education Counselors report to the Education Manager

Responsibilities: Education Counselors are responsible for being motivational guides for campers within our summer camp programs the weeks of June 13th 17th, July 11th-15th, and August 8th-12th. They are the face of our organization to provide a safe and fun atmosphere through experiential learning. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Engagement programs as available.

Day to Day Duties:

  • Responsible for camp logistics from set-up to breakdown
  • Organizing and implementing team building activities with campers
  • Assisting Educators and Education Assistants with camp curriculum
  • Manage conflict resolution situations
  • Maintain safe and enjoyable camp environment for participants
  • Collaborate with Educators and Education Assistants to meet medical requirements of participants


  • 16+ years of age
  • Ability to manage a group of youth ages 6-15
  • Past experience babysitting or working as a camp counselor preferred
  • Passionate about educating, entertaining, and sharing the work and mission of the Catawba Riverkeeper organization with campers
  • Comfortable speaking in a group setting
  • Time management skills; personal timeliness, manage group movement between locations, facilitating activities within time frame
  • Available and committed to specific camp dates
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working in a team environment
  • CPR/AED Certification (if unable to attend specific staff training)


  • Pass county criminal background check
  • Mandatory 3-day staff training hosted in March, June or as hired that includes:
    • Detailed information about Catawba Riverkeeper
    • Group facilitation activities
    • Department and job specific training
    • Cross-training in Engagement programs
    • Riverkeeper specific CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
    • Cost $40 for overall training program
  • Must be willing to work the designated camp weeks: June 13th-17th, July 11th-15th, August 8th-12th
  • Must be willing to work in an outdoor setting under various weather conditions and across a variety of terrains
  • Must have reliable personal transportation to and from McAdenville, NC
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
