Kayak Operations Manager on Duty

Position Title: Kayak Operations Manager on Duty (Seasonal/Part-Time)
Accountability: Kayak Operations Manager on Duty report to the Engagement Manager

Responsibilities: Kayak Operations Manager on Duty positions (MODs) are responsible for leading the overall kayak operations for the day. They support day-of kayak operational staff including Kayak Guides, Kayak Techs, and Shuttle Drivers as well as assist various Riverkeeper managers and directors in executing programs. MODs are the public face and lead of the Riverkeeper’s kayak programs while communicating our mission and activities. MODs ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for staff and guests through efficient logistical management and troubleshooting issues as they appear with professionalism and care. There may be cross-over opportunities to support Education programs as available. 

Day to Day Duties:

  • Manage logistics for all areas of kayak operations on-site
  • Support all kayak operational staff to ensure proper program execution in accordance with the program’s standard operating procedures
  • Oversee equipment and guest transportation using the Riverkeeper truck and trailer, and at times the passenger van and shuttle
  • Collaborate staff breaks through scheduling and filling in  
  • Facilitate all duties of Kayak Guides, Kayak Techs and Shuttle Drivers if needed
  • Engage guests about the area’s waterway, local community and mission and current activities of the organization
  • Ensure proper collection of paperwork and payment for rentals and programs
  • Assess guests’ experiences after a rental or program to collect feedback to help strengthen logistics, staff training, and community outreach
  • Lead and make decisions in emergencies while communicating with staff  
  • Responsible for maintaining and cleaning equipment as needed
  • Assist Catawba Riverkeeper directors, managers, and coordinators as needed

Qualifications:

  • 21+ years of age
  • Comfortable paddling in Class I – III water
  • Pass on-water proficiency test to ensure proper river navigation and safety skills
  • ACA Swiftwater Rescue certification preferred
  • Ability to implement all responsibilities of a Kayak Guide, Kayak Tech and Shuttle Driver
  • Passionate about educating, entertaining, and sharing the work and mission of the Catawba Riverkeeper organization to the community
  • Comfortable speaking to a wide range of people and customizing communication accordingly
  • Time management skills: committed to a two-week schedule notice and consistent attendance
  • Ability to maintain an organized and detailed workflow with changing variables
  • Ability to make quick and authoritative decisions and remain calm in potentially tense and/or chaotic situations
  • Comfortable working autonomously as well as working in a team environment

Requirements:

  • Mandatory 3-day staff training hosted in March, June or as hired that includes,
    • Detailed information about Catawba Riverkeeper
    • Group facilitation activities
    • Department and job specific training
    • Cross-training in Education
    • Riverkeeper specific CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
    • Cost $40 for overall training program
  • Must provide personal kayak, skirt, paddle, PFD
  • Available to work weekends: shifts primarily occur on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Available to work seasonally: April through September
  • Ability to work in outdoor settings under various weather conditions
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license at all times
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds with frequency throughout the day
