Join Catawba Riverkeeper at The Boathouse on the 1st Thursday of each month May – October (Kickoff on April 10) for rotating outdoor sports.

Each event will begin at 6:30 PM at the Boathouse in McAdenville, NC. After introductions, the group will paddle, bike, or run for about 45 minutes to an hour. Then, we invite you to enjoy good company, beverages, and snacks at the Boathouse.

Schedule and Event Descriptions

April 10 - Series Kickoff!

Introduction to Paddle Bike Run Series! We are kicking off the season long series with intros into each sport, food trucks, live music and more.

  • Participants looking to experience a group activity, here is the Paddle-Bike-Run Schedule for the day:
    • 1pm- Paddle will begin with an Intro to Kayak Clinic and some kayaking 101 tips before enjoying a group paddle along the South Fork River
    • 2pm-Bike will encompass general biking etiquette and a 4 mile group mountain bike ride on the South Fork Trail
    • 3pm- Run will include general running tips and 2 mile group run on the South Fork Trail
  • Gear: Participants can bring their own gear or rent kayaks, paddles, and PFDs for $20 ($10 for CRF members). Limited Bike Rentals ($25) will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

May 5 - Paddle!

Wondering where to paddle throughout the Catawba River Basin? We’ll give you the inside scoop on some of our favorite paddling locations throughout region.

We’ll also give you a quick overview and share some tips to get you more comfortable on the water.

  • Activity: 2 mile group flatwater paddle
  • Description: We will start and finish at the kayak launch location directly next to The Boathouse. After the paddle, stick around for a food truck, local craft beer and further discussion about different types of boats and sections of the 8900 miles of waterways within the Catawba-Wateree River Basin.
  • Gear: Participants can bring their own gear or rent kayaks, paddles, and PFDs. Rentals are first come, first served.

June 2 - Bike!

Intro to Biking

  • Activity: Entry level 4 mile group trail ride
  • Description: We will begin the night with a brief introductory session about bike etiquette and safety on various types of terrain and surfaces (roads, greenways, gravel, trails) before practicing some of those skills on the South Fork Trail.
    • 4 mi group ride. Stick around afterwards for local craft beer, questions, and further discussion of other local cycling scene and our favorite places to ride.
  • Gear: Limited Bike Rentals ($25) will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

July 7 - Run!

Intro to Trail Running/Hiking

  • Activity: 2-3 mile group trail run
  • Description: Looking to get into trail running or hiking, but not sure where to start? Gear, trail etiquette, pace, and more … we will go over the basics to get you more comfortable and, on your way, to enjoying the many trail systems in our region. After the basics, we will go on a group trail run/hike on the South Fork Trail just steps away from the Boathouse.
    • After the run, we will stick around and answer any trail running/hiking questions you have over a local craft beer or two!
  • Gear: Participants must bring their own gear

August 4 - Paddle!

The Importance of Clean Water. We will experience this firsthand by exploring and paddling a short section of the South Fork River and discussing how your efforts can impact our region.

  • Activity: 2 mile group flatwater paddle
  • Description: We’ll continue the Paddle, Bike, Run Series powered by OrthoCarolina with something at the forefront of our mission: Clean Water.
    • Afterwards, we’ll continue the discussion over local craft beers which starts with the base ingredient of … you

September 1 - Bike!

Looking to get into biking/cycling, but not sure where to start? Join us for Intro to Biking at The Boathouse.

  • Activity: 2 mile or 4 mile group greenway ride
  • Description: Gear, etiquette, maintenance, and more … we will go over the basics to get you more comfortable and, on your way, to enjoying this lifelong sport. After the basics, choose between a 2mi or 4 mi group greenway ride from The Boathouse!
    • We might even stick around afterwards and show you how to change a flat tire over a local craft beer or two.
  • Gear: Limited Bike Rentals ($25) will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

October 6 - Night Hike!

Nocturnal Animals Night Hike

  • Activity: 1-2 mile night hike
  • Description: Ever wonder what animals do at night? Join us as we give an overview of the nighttime wildlife in our region before we set off on our own group night hike along the McAdenville Greenway in search of our friends.
    • After the hike, stick around and enjoy a local craft beer, food truck, s’mores, and more conversation about the critters in our region.
  • Gear: Sunset is at 7:00pm - participants must bring a headlamp or illumination device and dress in bright clothes!

November 6 - Series Finale!

PBR Grand Finale!! 1-5pm

We’ll close out the Paddle, Bike, Run series powered by OrthoCarolina in fashion by testing the various skills we learned throughout the year and celebrating another great opportunity to live and active and healthy life!

Paddle, Bike and Run options will be available throughout the day as well as food trucks, live music and more. Series awards will also be handed out!

  • Participants looking to experience a group activity, here is the Paddle-Bike-Run Schedule for the day:
    • 1pm- Run will include general running tips and 1.5mi loop on the McAdenville Greenway
    • 2pm- Bike will encompass general biking etiquette and 2mi loop of the McAdenville Greenway
    • 3pm- Paddle will begin with an Intro to Kayak Clinic and some kayaking 101 tips before enjoying a group paddle along the South Fork River
  • Gear: Participants can bring their own gear or rent kayaks, paddles, and PFDs for $20 ($10 for CRF members). Limited Bike Rentals ($25) will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
