When it rains, water runs off of impervious surfaces (like roads, parking lots and buildings). The runoff carries debris, chemicals, motor oil and sediment into urban streams and creeks – eventually, making its way to the lakes and river. Additionally, this rapidly moving water causes severe erosion, flash flooding and water quality concerns that are harmful to human health and the environment. Since 1976, the greater Charlotte region has lost acres of natural space to impervious surface.
