Riparian Restoration Program

Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation

Is Your Streambank In Need of Stabilization?

Thanks to grant support from the Catawba-Wateree Habitat Enhancement Program and the North Carolina Land and Water Fund, Catawba Riverkeeper and our volunteers are able to offer materials, labor, and resources for live staking along North Carolina streams this fall.

We are looking for landowners and community partners with streamside property to join us in restoring riparian areas. With grant funding now available to help cover costs, this is an incredible opportunity to protect your land from erosion. When you do so, you'll save habitats and you'll protect our shared waterways from increased sedimentation!

Don't let your shoreline or streambank end up like this!

Contact Northern Basin Director Grant Buckner at grant@catawbariverkeeper.org to learn more about our Riparian Restoration Program! North Carolina residents are eligible to receive materials, labor, and resources to help restore their riparian buffer, reduce erosion, and stabilize their streambank through live staking.

Unsure if your property is a good candidate for live staking?

Check out our Streambank Repair Assessment Protocol (SBRAP) webpage to assess your streambank.

What is Live Staking?

Live stakes are branch cuttings from native trees and shrubs that are planted along streambanks and shorelines to increase riparian buffers. Once planted, live stakes grow root systems that hold soil in place and prevent erosion into lakes, rivers, and streams. This low-cost method of streambank stabilization can greatly reduce erosion and sediment pollution in our waterways, improve water quality, and provide habitat for fish and wildlife.
